If you are driving along and have to swerve to miss a deer or another vehicle, you may end up hitting the guard rail on the side of the road. If this happens, you will want to take a look at your car to see if it has sustained any damage and you will want to get it to safety. Here are some steps you will want to take if this mishap happens to you while you are driving.

Move Your Vehicle To Safety

After you have hit the guard rail, you will want to bring your vehicle to a complete stop and pull it over to the side of the road so you will be able to see if it will be safe to continue driving. If you have hit the headlight so that it is no longer illuminating, you will not want to drive your vehicle in the dark, as it will be unsafe.

If you have scraped up the side of your vehicle, or if you have a lot of damage to the front fender, you might be able to drive without it being a problem. If your vehicle is not running correctly because of the impact, you will want it to be checked before you attempt to drive it.

Call Authorities

Your first call should be to 911 to let them know that your vehicle is on the side of the road. This will alert them in case they want to divert traffic or if they need to place a police car behind yours to alert other vehicles that there is a car in the way. They will also be able to give you a report of the incident that you can use to give to your insurance company about the accident.

Call Your Insurance

If the damage appears to be substantial, you will want to call your insurance agent. If the damage is not going to be more than your deductible to repair, you may want to forego calling so you will not have to pay the deductible because it will not be cost-effective.

Call For A Tow

Give a call to a towing company. You will want to get your vehicle and yourself to safety, and they will be able to bring you and your vehicle to your home. If you wish to bring your vehicle to a repair shop, they would be able to drop it off and then take you home afterward.

Make sure to give detailed instructions as to where on the road your vehicle is located. Towing companies usually cover a wide area and having an exact location will make it easier for them to find you promptly. Give a few landmarks or mile marker signs, if possible.
